Abstract - Makassar strait waters are known as one of waters in Indonesia which has deep sea characteristics and still vulnerable with foreign ships infiltration. Nowadays, Indonesian Navy is still focusing with security on sea surface, while with this technology advancement, there are lot of foreign submarines exploit the underwater areas for doing some transnational crime. One of underwater areas exploited is shadow zone. Therefore, it is important to do research on the shadow zone that has potential as a place to hide submarines. This research is using mixed methods. For processing quantitative data (shadow zone detection) research did some simulation/sound propagation modeling with Parabolic Equation method processed using Matlab and AcTup v 2.2L toolbox. While processing qualitative data took from analyzing interview’s result to complete the quantitative ones. Result of research is the most shadow zone was detected by 500 Hz frequency. From parabolic equation methods simulation result we can know the shadow zone from tried frequency and its source of sound, so that by this cognition Indonesian Navy can minimilize the shadow zone when patrol by using sonar frequency and right source of sound. The method can also be used as a navigation information that later can complement existing methods in the Navy.
